Summary Information About Çankırı

Çankırı Province is a province of Turkey, which lies close to the capital, Ankara. The provincial capital is Çankırı. Historically known as Gangra, about 140 km (87 mi) northeast of Ankara. It is situated about 800 m (2500 ft) above sea level.

Most industry is concentrated near the Çankırı city center and the town of Korgun. Other towns included in the larger industrial area of the city are Şabanözü, Çerkeş, Ilgaz, Kurşunlu, and Yapraklı.

Çankırı is primarily agricultural with wheat, beans, corn and tomatoes the most common crops.

Summers in Çankırı are hot with little rain. Winters are cold with rain and occasional snow.

History of Çankırı

When the archaeological studies in Çankırı are examined; Paleolithic Period ( 600000-12000 BC) , Chalcolithic Period ( 6000-3200/3000 BC) , Old Bronze Age ( 3200/3000-2000 BC) , Iron Age (1200- BC ) There are works reflecting the  periods of 550), Hellenistic Period ( 330-30 BC) , Roman Imperial Period (6/5 BC – AD 285), Late Roman-Byzantine Period (285-1453 AD) . In the light of archaeological data, we can say that the city has a rich cultural heritage.

 

After the establishment of the Anatolian Seljuk state, while expanding the population influence in the east and conquering the Cilicia region, Danişment Gazi, one of the commanders who participated in the Battle of Manzikert, opened the Yeşilırmak and Kızılırmak valleys to the Turks. Karatekin, who gained fame as the conqueror of Çankırı , was also busy with the conquest of the Sinop region. Karatekin, who conquered Sinop and other coasts, was forced to leave these places. He died in Çankırı, which he conquered, and was buried in his tomb in Çankırı Castle.

 

Çankırı quickly became Turkish during the Danishment period and became one of the strongest areas of Turkish fortification in a short time.
